The dam is named after Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV during whose rule the Chief Engineer, Sri M Visveshvaraya engineered the construction of the dam. Adding a touch of sanctity to the place is a beautiful sculpture of Goddess Cauvery at the foot of the dam.
